Pictured is a mother and daughter celebrating Christmas by visiting Santa Claus. Something like this was unheard of in early colonial America.
From 1659-1681, anyone caught celebrating Christmas in the colonies was charged with a fine. America decided to make it a federal holiday almost a century later. The day was so unimportant that the first Congressional meeting was on December 25 in 1789.
